Dalea jamesii

James’s Prairie Clover - Dalea jamesii
East of Hillsboro, NM
May 15, 2014

On May 15, 2014, we saw a number of Dalea jamesii, James’s Prairie Clover on a walk east of Hillsboro.  It seems to thrive in dry sandy/rocky areas like this.  Like D. formosa, the flowers of this plant start out yellow and turn red when fertilized.

The range of Dalea jamesii, within the United States, is shown on the BONAP map to the right.  The light green color indicates that the species is native to, and common within, the county indicated.  The species is also found in northern Mexico.

O. B. Metcalf collected the specimen shown below near Hillsboro on September 6, 1904.
