This species is found in the southwestern United States (as shown by the BONAP map to the right).   See the April 2020 issue of The Black Range Naturalist for a description of the route it was found along.

The type specimen (shown below from the United States Herbarium, specimen number 692,689) was collected by Leslie N. Goodding in the Mule Mountains of Arizona in 1912.  Goodding was considered an expert on the flora of the American Southwest and several plant species are named in his honor.
