As shown in the BONAP map to the right, this species is found in the central and southern Rocky Mountains of the United States.  This species is also referred to as Towering Jacob’s Ladder.  It was first described by Asa Gray in 1878.  There are two described subspecies (albiflorum and robustum).  Varieties include the nominate form as well as alpinum, molle, and flavum.

There are a significant number of species in the Polemonium genus.
