This species is widely distributed (see the U. S. distribution in the BONAP map to the right).  There are five subspecies, the species is found in North America, South America (Argentina and Chile), Eurasia, New Guinea, New Zealand, and southern Australia.  The physical variation of the species matches the geographic distribution, that is - it is extensive.  The plants shown here are of the nominate form.  The intermediates in all of the zones of contact show reduced fertility - speciation in process.
