This species was first described by John C. La Duke in 1985 (The Southwestern Naturalist, “A New Species of Sphaeralcea (Malvaceae)”, Vol. 30, No. 3, pp. 433-436). The type specimen was collected in Sierra County, New Mexico, at the intersection of NM55 and road to Hot Springs Landing on the Rio Grande on July 6, 1982.
