Dakota Vervain - Glandularia bipinnatifida

On January 23 we had found Dakota Vervain, Glandularia bipinnatifida var. latilobata, in flower near the National Defense Mine site east of Hillsboro.
The Biota of North America Program (BONAP) considers this variety to be a full species. As shown on the BONAP map to the right this variety is found only in New Mexico and Arizona in the United States, light green indicates that the species is native to the county indicated and not rare.
The “rest of the species” has a more extensive range in the United States, primarily through the plains states, as shown on the second map to the right (the range of the variety would be added to identify the full U. S. range). It is found southward through Mexico to Nicaragua.
English synonyms for the full species included Prairie Verbena, Purple Prairie Verbena, Dakota Vervain, Dakota Mock Vervain, Moradilla, and Alfombrilla.
The specimen used by B. L. Turner to make the current taxonomic determination, G. b. var. latilobata, is shown below. The specimen was collected by T. R. Van Devender on 24 April 2004 a few miles west of Agua Prieta, Mexico (Agua Prieta is on the Mexican side of the US/Mexico border).
