Hymenoxys hoopesii

Western Sneezeweed - Hymenoxys hoopesii
Near the Continental Divide of the Black Range
West of Poverty Flat, NM, USA

It is with a great deal of trepidation that I venture into the realm of yellow composites.  But here I go, I think this is Hymenoxys hoopesii, Western Sneezeweed.  The photographs were taken west of Poverty Flat, near the Continental Divide of the northern Black Range, New Mexico, USA.

This species is also known as Orange Sneezeweed and Owl’s-Claws.  Scientific synonyms include Dugaldia hoopesii, Heleniastrum hoopesii, and Helenium hoopesii.  It was first described by Asa Gray in 1864 (as Dugaldia hoopesii).  Mark W. Bierner is responsible for the current description of this species.

The United States range of this species is shown on the BONAP map to the right.  Light green means the species is native to, and not rare within, the county indicated.  Yellow indicates that the species is rare within the county.

The specimen shown below was collected by J. T. Rothrock on Mt. Graham, Graham, Arizona, USA in 1874.
